Calling all students:
Are you ready for the next RIL college cohort?
RIL Academy
The educational outreach & AI workforce upskilling track of the Responsible Innovation Lab.
The RIL Academy turns our core work — AI literacy, responsible innovation, food & resource access, and civic tech — into practical micro-certificates that people can actually use in school, work, and community projects.
We use bias aware and bias-declared persona chatbots as guided teaching assistants so learners can
build AI-ready and workforce-ready skills with guardrails, not hype. You can learn more about them at Give Me Back My Bias.

What the RIL Academy Does
The RIL Academy is how the Responsible Innovation Lab brings its teaching model to the public — through short, stackable certificates that align with our internships, pilots, and partner work.
Each certificate blends:
- Short, accessible modules you can take alongside work or school.
- Guided AI practice with persona chatbots and clear guardrails.
- Reflection and bias awareness based on our INNOVATE framework.
- Direct ties to real pilots like SDG Campus, HouseKey, and PIIC consulting.
Powered by the INNOVATE Framework & Ethical AI
RIL Academy certificates are grounded in our INNOVATE framework:
Inclusive, Next-Gen, Nimble, Open, Visionary, Accountable, Tailored, Ethical.
Mave is our primary lab assistant and orchestrator for many of these pathways.
You can chat with our Mave in the bubble below or check out the AskMave Thinkific Assistant on ChatGPT – if you want to save your threads while taking a course.
Three Tracks, One Capstone
RIL Academy is organized into three tracks plus a capstone. Learners can drop into a single certificate or follow a path that connects coursework with internships and pilots.
Track 1 — AI Workforce & Responsible Technology
Practical skills to work, lead, and think in an AI-powered world — without outsourcing judgment. This track focuses on everyday workflows: writing, research, planning, documentation, and decision support using AI as a tool, not a crutch. Certificates here connect directly to our AI workforce development programs, so what you practice in the Academy can carry straight into internships, consulting work, and your current job.
Track 2 — SDG & Civic Impact
Skills to make systems more just, sustainable, and democratic. This track links coursework to our food & resource access pilots, SDG Campus, and civic innovation partners. You’ll learn how to read systems, map power, and design changes that are small enough to start but big enough to matter — whether that’s improving campus food access, informing local policy, or supporting community-led projects.
Track 3 — Being Human
Emotional intelligence, bias awareness, and relationship skills for navigating the AI age without losing yourself. This track is about how you think, feel, and communicate when everything around you is speeding up. Certificates focus on conversations, boundaries, and bias-aware decision-making so you can show up as a more grounded teammate, leader, caregiver, or organizer — online and offline.
Capstone — Applied Responsible Innovation
A culminating, project-based certificate where learners bring everything together into a real pilot, prototype, or policy concept tied to RIL’s work. The capstone is built for people who want something concrete to point to — a case study, a working demo, or a documented initiative — that can be shared with employers, partners, or admissions committees as evidence of what they can actually deliver.
Launch Certificates
These four certificates form the foundation of the RIL Academy. Each one stands on its own, but together they build the core skills people need to work, think, and act responsibly in an AI-shaped world.
Learning in the Age of AI * open now *
Host: AskMave
Stop fearing AI. Start using it wisely.
A grounded introduction to what modern AI is (and isn’t), how it works, and how to use it as a partner in thinking — without outsourcing judgment. This certificate builds confidence and clarity so learners can approach AI tools with skill instead of anxiety.
What You’ll Learn
- How today’s AI systems actually work (in plain language)
- Safe, bias-aware workflows that increase clarity rather than confusion
- How to use AI as a “thinking partner” while keeping humans in control
- Everyday prompts and patterns for work, school, and real-life decision-making
- The difference between healthy assistance and unhealthy offloading
Critical Thinking + AI
Host: Lucy
Think clearly in a world that profits when you don’t.
This certificate strengthens your reasoning in a digital environment designed to distract, divide, and overwhelm. You’ll use AI as a challenge tool — not a shortcut — to test arguments, reveal bias, and sharpen your ability to make sense of complex information.
Pairs directly with our Give Me Back My Bias project.
What You’ll Learn
- How to identify flawed reasoning, misinformation, and narrative manipulation
- How to use AI to challenge your own thinking instead of confirming it
- Bias awareness skills central to responsible innovation
- Practical techniques for analyzing claims, sources, and arguments
- How critical thinking connects to the INNOVATE framework
Sustainability
Hosts: Dave & Buzz
Real-world sustainability, not just green slogans.
A hands-on introduction to circular living, repair, thrift, and low-cost sustainability practices. This certificate connects directly to our ecosystem work across EcoConcern, EcoCafé, and the SDG Campus. It’s built for people who want sustainability that actually works in daily life — not just theory.
What You’ll Learn
- Small actions that reduce waste and save money (repair, refurbish, reuse)
- How to build a sustainable routine that fits real life, not perfectionism
- The basics of SDGs and how local behaviors connect to global systems
- How to read product claims and avoid “greenwashed” marketing
- Hands-on micro-actions inspired by EcoConcern & EcoCafé community projects
Civic Power
Host: Joe Bob
Know your rights. Use your voice. Don’t get played.
A practical, grounded course on rights, power, narrative influence, and civic action — shaped by our work with Do What MATAs.
You’ll learn how to stay safe, stay informed, and stay effective in a world where information and AI systems increasingly shape public life.
What You’ll Learn
- Your core rights in public spaces, protests, and digital environments
- How information ecosystems and AI shape public narratives
- How to stay safe and effective during civic engagement
- How movements gain power — and how communities can protect themselves
- Tools for resisting manipulation, polarization, and misinformation
