Responsible Innovation Lab
An ethical AI first, accessibility-by-default nonprofit incubator.
We advance ethical, inclusive, and future-ready innovation through the INNOVATE framework
— pairing policy with practice so people gain skills, tools, and trust.
What We Do
The Responsible Innovation Lab (RIL) helps communities thrive in the AI age. We co-design and deploy practical solutions with students, educators, nonprofits, and civic partners — grounded in inclusion, accountability, and long-term public benefit.
Our programs span AI education & workforce development, food & resource access, chatbot personas & AI literacy tools, and the inNOVAte Collective. Through PIIC internships and consulting, students gain hands-on experience while partners get high-value deliverables. We integrate Principled Innovation from ASU, Responsible Innovation, and Sustainable Innovation in our INNOVATE framework.
We are a college internship and research focused program for current students and recent graduates.
Powered by the INNOVATE Framework and Ethical AI
INNOVATE = Inclusive, Next-Gen, Nimble, Open, Visionary, Accountable, Tailored, Ethical.
- Inclusive → Accessibility — mobile/SMS/web by default so no one is left out.
- Next-Gen — foresight, 7th-generation thinking, AI risk awareness.
- Nimble — rapid pilots with scalable playbooks.
- Open — methods, templates, and lessons learned are shared.
- Visionary — aligned to national AI priorities and local needs.
- Accountable → Guardrails — domain-locking, consent, privacy-by-design.
- Tailored — context-specific solutions for schools, cities, and nonprofits.
- Ethical → Bias Aware — persona responsibility and long-term public benefit.

Why It Matters
AI is changing how people learn, work, and access essential services. RIL translates policy into practice — pairing workforce pipelines with civic pilots and practical AI literacy — so people gain skills and see impact where they live.
Why Us
The Responsible Innovation Lab was founded by 30 years in IT and 15 years in higher education. Before launching RIL as an independent nonprofit, he spent over a decade inside university IT — including eight years working directly with student interns and in classes on innovation programs that bridged technology, ethics, and design.
RIL grew out of his work at Arizona State University’s Responsible Innovation Guild , evolving into today’s lab for public-interest innovation. The last four years have been focused on forming and founding the Lab, turning that guild into a full ecosystem for responsible AI, SDG-aligned projects, and student-powered pilots.
The launch of the RIL Deal as a nonprofit was accomplished due to the team of students and graduates that encouraged the continuation of our program and their desire to be a part of something that mattered and an organization that actually put students first, rather than just talk about it.
